GHOE is A&T’s name for homecoming, and the nickname is the point. The Greensboro weekend is routinely cited as the largest single-school HBCU homecoming in the country. Football at Truist Stadium is the Saturday spine. The rest of the week is coronation, the step show, the parade, and hip-hop that has been on the bill long enough that a Jadakiss run-through does not read as a crossover stunt. It reads as the yard.
That is how hip-hop travels on these campuses — a New York rap catalog hitting a North Carolina HBCU crowd that already knows the records. The story is not a booking announcement first. It is a night the crowd is in, loud enough that the rest of the culture hears it afterward.
The calendar around the set is bigger than one performance. A&T is marking GHOE’s centennial this fall. University leaders have set homecoming week for Sunday, Oct. 25, through Sunday, Nov. 1, with the parade, the football game against Elon University, and the homecoming hip-hop concert stacked on Saturday, Oct. 31 — Halloween. Chancellor James R. Martin II has called A&T homecoming a league of its own. The centennial is expected to draw at least 150,000 people to Greensboro. GHOE is not a one-night concert brand. It is a week the culture already treats as a destination, and hip-hop is one of the ways that destination stays loud. When a MC of that catalog is on the A&T stage, the story is not that rap visited an HBCU. The story is that this HBCU’s homecoming still has room on the mic for the records the crowd grew up on.
